Staff Software Engineer

Job Description

Toast is recruiting on behalf of a fast-growing health technology company operating in the primary care SaaS space. The company serves independent physician practices across North America, providing a cloud-based clinical platform that helps doctors manage patient care more effectively. With a fully remote engineering team and a clear mission to improve outcomes for both physicians and patients, this organization is at an exciting inflection point, actively building AI-driven product experiences into the core of their platform. This is a Staff Software Engineer role sitting at the intersection of clinical technology and applied AI.
 

Responsibilities

 

• Design, build, and maintain AI-powered features within a full-stack web application used daily by physicians and their care teams.
• Take ownership of features end-to-end, from system design and architecture through deployment and production support.
• Partner closely with Product and UX to scope and prioritize new capabilities, translating complex technical constraints into clear, actionable plans.
• Contribute to and shape the technical direction for AI-native product experiences across the platform.
• Participate in code reviews, mentor other engineers, and actively contribute to improving team practices and engineering culture.
• Collaborate with support and infrastructure teams to triage and resolve production issues quickly.
• Deliver measurable improvements to physician workflows and patient outcomes through the software you build.

 

Requirements

 

• 5 or more years of professional software development experience, with a track record of delivering high-quality software.
• Demonstrated ability to build and maintain APIs using modern backend technologies.
• Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical problems clearly to both technical and non-technical collaborators.
• Genuine enthusiasm for building systems that incorporate AI and large language models.
• Experience with Python and MySQL on the backend is a strong asset.
• Familiarity with a modern JavaScript framework such as React or Angular is an asset.
• Experience deploying and operating systems on AWS or other cloud infrastructure is an asset.
• Prior exposure to the US healthcare industry or health tech is a plus but not required.

• Base salary of $170,000 to $200,000 USD per year, or $185,000 to $215,000 CAD per year, depending on location and experience.
