Team Lead - Development
Job Description
Toast is recruiting on behalf of a venture-backed climate technology company that is the global leader in high-resolution greenhouse gas detection from space. The company serves customers across industry, government, and finance, providing precise emissions data that helps organizations make informed environmental decisions. They operate out of Montreal and Ottawa and are expanding into adjacent technologies including thermal imaging, wildfire response, and infrastructure monitoring. This is a Team Lead role where you will guide a team of developers building the software layer that brings satellite emissions data to life, including customer-facing applications, public APIs, and automated reporting tools.
Responsibilities
- Support and mentor a team of developers working across the full stack on customer-facing apps, public APIs, and report generation tools
- Create space for autonomy, ownership, and learning through mentorship, pairing, and healthy team rituals
- Stay close to the work by contributing to design decisions and helping the team land the right technical solutions
- Collaborate with product, science, and platform teams to ensure work is well-scoped, grounded, and clearly defined
- Champion engineering practices that balance speed and stability, including testing, documentation, and observability
- Help shape the long-term vision for how software is built and delivered across this part of the stack
- Support team members in their professional growth and help them take on more responsibility over time
Requirements
- Proven experience in a formal leadership role such as Team Lead or managing direct reports, with demonstrated responsibility for guiding and overseeing others
- 5 or more years of experience as a software developer with production work in Python, React, and TypeScript
- Comfortable across the full stack and able to reason about systems, not just individual components
- Strong written communicator, able to work effectively across time zones and disciplines
- Thoughtful about team dynamics and how teams work, not just what they build
- Able to make good progress in ambiguous situations without needing every detail up front
- Bonus: experience with APIs, reporting, or data-heavy interfaces; comfort with scientific or geospatial data; French/English bilingualism
